I'm a Student
If you are a SSIG insured student or dependent:
- Find a medical provider
- Need a claim form (PDF: 65KB)
- Need a replacement identification card
- Need a copy of your summary of benefits
Preparing for the collegiate experience is one of life's great milestones. As proud and excited as you are, stress and anxiety are probably also among the many emotions you feel during this time.
With all of the documents to sign, dates to remember, and programs to consider, health insurance coverage is also a very important decision that deserves a considerable amount of attention.
Your school's health and counseling centers are available as a primary source of physical and mental care. However, an after-hours medical emergency or the need for medical care beyond the resources of these facilities will require access to medical care in your school's local area.
If you are currently covered on your parent's or guardian's health insurance plan or have purchased individual health coverage you need to ask the following questions:
Will my current plan cover me while I'm a student at school?
Often health insurance plans through your parents or guardian (especially HMO's) will not cover routine care or non-emergency services outside of your home area. You need to carefully read your existing policy to be sure. The SSIG policy will pay for local care and can complement existing coverage.
Are there participating medical providers in my school's local area?
Again, if you plan to use an existing policy for your health insurance needs you should carefully check the participating provider listings. You should also then contact participating providers in your school's local area to make sure that they are accepting new patients. The SSIG policy automatically includes a network of participating providers in your school's local area.
Will my plan cover me if I decide to travel abroad?
If your health insurance plan covers you for international travel or study abroad you may be covered only in the event of an emergency. The SSIG plan provides coverage while you are at home, on campus, or if you study abroad for both routine and emergency care.
Does my school have a policy to cover me if I get hurt while playing sports for my school?
Your school has a sports policy to cover accidents incurred while playing or practicing sports at school sponsored events but these policies are "excess plans" that require you to first submit charges to your health insurance plan. Often the sports policy has a deductible or dollar amount you need to pay before any policy benefits are available. This deductible could be several hundred to several thousand dollars. The SSIG plan includes coverage for intercollegiate sports injuries and often the coverage in the SSIG plan covers the full amount of your school's sports policy deductible.
So will my plan cover me if I get hurt playing sports for my school?
Many plans provide coverage for the emergency room but often follow-up care, such as rehabilitative therapy or specialist visits, is not covered outside of your home area. Confirm that these services are covered by your existing health insurance plan and that there are participating medical providers in your school's local area to avoid traveling home for each visit or service. The SSIG plan fills this gap by offering a network of participating providers in your school's local area.
At what age am I no longer covered by my parent's plan?
The age limit for eligibility as a covered dependent varies from one plan to another. These age limits typically range from age 19-23. Some policies also determine eligibility by the number of courses or credit hours you are taking. It's best to talk with a representative of your health insurance plan. Be aware of the age limit and credit hour requirements of your insurance plan to make sure that you remain covered during the entire academic year.
What do I do if I feel sick or am injured and the student health center is closed?
If you have a medical emergency dial 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
If you aren't sure whether it is a medical emergency or not, SSIG insured students can call 866.912.6292 and speak with one of the registered nurses of Nurse Response. This is a 24-hour a day, 7 days a week service that the SSIG has partnered with to provide medical advice to our insured students.
Who do I contact for claims questions?
If you are insured by SSIG please contact Administrative Concepts, Inc at 800.293.9229 or www.visit-aci.com for all claims and coverage questions.
Remember to always carry your health insurance card, familiarize yourself with participating providers in your school's local area, and contact a representative of your health insurance plan if you have any questions. You should contact the admissions office or the student health center for details regarding health insurance coverage available through your school.
